Older buildings have character, but they may trigger Heritage or Streetscape issues. Although they loved their 100 year old cottage, the owners wanted a modern light filled living space that connected with their garden. They also wanted a new garage and an Ensuite to the master bedroom. The solution was unusual in that instead of reducing the mass of the Garage to make it less imposing from the street we gave the Garage greater visual mass and reduced the height of the new living area. The result was that we adhered to Heritage design principals as the old Cottage still retained it original form as a discrete building. A sympathetic palette of materials including recycled red brick helped tie the new and the old together. The outcome was a smooth and quick approval. Building is due to start as soon as the current Covid situation is reconciled.
